The First Cat follows the activity of a cougar, many thousands of years ago, who was struck by a tendril of lightening that left him with a strange ability observe the societal evolution of mankind in a manner not normal to wild felids

“The cat moved, which it did effortlessly, whether wandering the forest, hunting down prey or escaping fires or other predators.  Only when supremely tired, or when the sun was bright and he found a place protected by surrounding shade and rocks, did he rest.  It was in resting that the cat first came to consider the humans.  They were a plague.  They were rotten prey, without taste and painful.  They made too much noise, smelled badly but could throw rocks and sticks with amazing accuracy.
They were to be avoided, except they were everywhere in his surrounding forests, glens, rivers and streams.  He could not continue to avoid them forever, particularly if he came upon just the right female of his own kind and that led to cubs of his own.  No, he had to somehow get along with them, but not all of them.  He would wait and see, to discover if some sort of broken and banded back together tribe could be assembled with animals not of his own kind.  So far, in his life, there’d been no other of his species once he’d ben rousted from his tribe, so long ago and far away.
The humans, and possibly some others, would have to do.  He laid in wait, one eye always on limited alert.  He had time and there were many humans to be avoided and hidden from until possibly the time was just right.  He would wait.”
